Rabbi Schwartzman is newly ordained, but she is no stranger to the rabbinate. She is the daughter of Rabbi Joel Schwartzman, who served for many years as an Air Force Chaplain and currently serves a congregation in Colorado, and the granddaughter of Rabbi Dr. Sylvan Schwartzman who served as the Professor of Education and Practical Rabbinics at Hebrew Union College. Rabbi Schwartzman has a B.A. in English with a minor in Religion and concentration in Education from the University of Virginia and has served student congregations in Marion, Indiana, Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Parkersburg, West Virginia. She has been singing and dancing since childhood and was the vocalist for a Klezmer band.
Temple Beth Zion's Search Committee, chaired by Laurence Rubin and Melissa Milch-Klein was impressed by Rabbi Schwartzman's sermons and writings as well as her energy and enthusiasm. She will join Senior Rabbi Harry Rosenfeld and Cantorial Soloist Penny Myers on the pulpit.
