Rabbi Pokras

Rabbi Gary Pokras

Rabbi Gary Pokras returned to Western New York and became Temple Beth Zion's tenth Senior Rabbi on July 1, 2011. Rabbi Pokras was the overwhelming choice of the synagogue's Search Committee and Board of Trustees and he received the unanimous vote of the congregation at a special meeting in April 2011.

Prior to his return to TBZ, Rabbi Pokras served as Rabbi at Temple Judea in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Rabbi Pokras served as associate rabbi at Temple Beth Zion from 1999 to 2002, when he left to assume the pulpit at Temple Judea. Before entering the rabbinate, he was a professional guitarist specializing in classical and jazz music. Rabbi Pokras studied economics and guitar at Northwestern University and also received masters' degrees in guitar performance and music theory from The Meadows School for the Arts at Southern Methodist University. The Connecticut native was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's New York City Campus.

In Western New York, Rabbi Pokras is known beyond the walls of Temple Beth Zion for establishing "Mitzvah Day" in 2002 as a community response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event continues to draw Jews, Christians and Muslims together each year to perform volunteer projects on behalf of others.

Rabbi Pokras brings seasoned programming, community and pastoral experience to TBZ. When asked about his vision, Rabbi Pokras says:

"Jewish community is the place where we strive to realize our highest potential; it is where we create the social, educational and spiritual structures we need. When we succeed, our community becomes holy in that it is set apart in purpose and in character. It should be like no other community we know."

Rabbi Pokras is humbled and honored to be Temple Beth Zion's Senior Rabbi given TBZ's proud history of spiritual leadership in the Buffalo community.

Rabbi Pokras, his wife Shauna and children Stephanie and Marshall are thrilled to be a part of the Jewish community in Buffalo.
