Rabbi Harry Rosenfeld

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Rabbi Rosenfeld received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from John Carroll University in 1976. His education continued with a Master's degree in Hebrew Letters and Rabbinic Ordination from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1981 and he has taken many courses in advance Jewish Studies and Spirituality at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. After serving as Assistant Rabbi in Memphis, Tennessee for 3 years, Rabbi Rosenfeld arrived in Anchorage in 1984 to serve as the Rabbi of Congregation Beth Sholom until the summer of 2000. In September, 2000, Rabbi Rosenfeld was called to the position of Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo, New York.

In addition to his work at Beth Sholom, Rabbi Rosenfeld traveled throughout Alaska working with the Congregations in Fairbanks, Juneau and Kenai, and individual Jews in Bush Alaska. He also served as an adjunct professor at Alaska Pacific University, and was a guest columnist for the Anchorage Daily News. Rabbi Rosenfeld was also active in the Anchorage Human Services Community having served as a member of the Municipal Health and Human Services Commission, as the Co-Chair of the Municipal Social Services Block Grant Allocation Task Force, a member of the Mayor's Special Taskforce on the homeless, the Alaska State Legislature's Teen Pregnancy and Parenthood Taskforce, chair of the Municipal Forum on the Homeless, the board of Catholic Social Services of Anchorage, the Community Advisory Board to the Anchorage Daily News, as a Mentor for the Leadership Anchorage program and as the President of United Way of Anchorage. He also served on the board of the Interfaith Council of Anchorage which named their annual interfaith service award in his honor. In 1992, Rabbi Rosenfeld was elected to the board of the Pacific Association of Reform Rabbis and appointed to the Committee on Church and State of the Central Conference of Reform Rabbis (CCAR). He has also served on the Committee on Contracts for the CCAR and is a member of the National Executive Committee of the Rabbinic Cabinet of United Jewish Communities.

In 1994, Rabbi Rosenfeld was honored by the Alaska State Legislature for his community work against racism and again in 2000 for his 16 years of service to the people of Alaska.

Since his arrival in Buffalo Rabbi Rosenfeld has taken an active role in helping to grow the Western New York Jewish Community and outreach to our non-Jewish neighbors. He has chaired the Clergy Division of the Buffalo United Jewish Community Fund Drive for several years and has served on the board of the National Federation for Just Communities from which he received their Interfaith Award for his work in the community.

Rabbi Rosenfeld is married to Michele L. Hope who, as an archeologist with the federal government, has discovered and cataloged shipwrecks in the Arctic Ocean in Alaska.
